Weyburn's electric utility came into being in 1905 when Weyburn Electric Light and Machine Company was formed by a group of Canadian Pacific Railway employees. This present building was constructed when the City took over the utility in 1909. In January of 1959, the power plant was sold to SaskPower Corporation and then it stood empty until 1966. In 1967, the Soo Line Historical Society obtained possession of the power house on a rental basis from the city. Since 1969, it has been operating as a museum.
